กล่าวนำ Introduction:

โครงเรื่อง: คำเตือน ๖ ประการถึงอันตรายจากลิ้น

The 6 warnings about the danger of tongue:

1. ลิ้นก็เช่นเดียวกัน เป็นอวัยวะเล็กๆ แต่คุยอวดในเรื่องใหญ่โต (๕)

So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great exploits.(5)

2. และลิ้นนั้นเป็นไฟ ลิ้นเป็นโลกชั่วร้ายที่ตั้งอยู่ท่ามกลางอวัยวะต่างๆ ของเรา มันทำให้ทั้งกายเป็นมลทิน (๖)

And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is placed among our members as a world of iniquity; it stains the whole body.. (6)

3. ลิ้น เผาผลาญวงจรของชีวิต และตัวมันเองก็ถูกเผาผลาญโดยไฟนรก (๖)

The tongue is placed among our members as a world of iniquity; it stains the whole body, sets on fire the cycle of nature, and is itself set on fire by hell.  (6)

4. ลิ้นนั้นไม่มีมนุษย์คนไหนสามารถทำให้เชื่องได้ ลิ้นเป็นสิ่งชั่วร้ายที่อยู่ไม่สุขและเต็มไปด้วยพิษร้ายถึงตาย (๘)

But no one can tame the tongue—a restless evil, full of deadly poison.(8) 

5. เราสรรเสริญองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าและพระบิดาด้วยลิ้นนั้น และเราก็แช่งด่ามนุษย์ผู้ที่พระเจ้าทรงสร้างตามพระฉายาของพระองค์ด้วยลิ้นนั้น (๙-๑๐)

With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse those who are made in the likeness of God.  (9-10) 

6. บ่อน้ำพุจะมีทั้งน้ำจืดและน้ำเค็มพุ่งออกมาจากช่องเดียวกันได้หรือ? ต้นมะเดื่อจะออกผลเป็นมะกอกได้หรือ? และเถาองุ่นจะออกผลเป็นมะเดื่อได้หรือ? บ่อน้ำพุเค็มย่อมทำให้เกิดน้ำจืดไม่ได้ (๑๑-๑๒)

Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and brackish water? Can a fig tree, my brothers and sisters, yield olives, or a grapevine figs? No more can salt water yield fresh. (11-12)
