โครงเรื่อง: คำเตือน ๕ ประการในการโอ้อวด
The 5 warnings about boasting:
- ฟังให้ดีนะ ท่านทั้งหลายที่พูดว่า “วันนี้หรือพรุ่งนี้เราจะเข้าไปในเมืองนี้เมืองนั้น จะอยู่ที่นั่นสักปีหนึ่ง และจะค้าขายแล้วได้กำไร” (๑๓)
Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a town and spend a year there, doing business and making money.(13)
- ฟัง แต่ท่านไม่รู้เรื่องของวันพรุ่งนี้ ชีวิตของพวกท่านเป็นเหมือนอะไร? ก็เป็นเหมือนหมอกที่ปรากฏอยู่เพียงชั่วครู่แล้วก็จางหายไป (๑๔)
Yet you do not even know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. (14)
- แต่พวกท่านควรจะพูดว่า “ถ้าองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าทรงโปรด เราจะยังมีชีวิตอยู่ และจะทำสิ่งนี้หรือสิ่งนั้น” (๑๕)
Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wishes, we will live and do this or that.” (15)
- แต่เวลานี้ท่านกลับอวดอ้างด้วยความทะนงของตนเอง การอวดอ้างทุกอย่างนั้นล้วนเป็นความชั่ว (๑๖)
it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil. (16)
- เพราะฉะนั้น คนที่รู้ว่าอะไรเป็นความดีที่ต้องทำ แต่ไม่ได้ทำ คนนั้นจึงมีบาป(๑๗)
Anyone, then, who knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, commits sin. (17)
